The National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS) provides resources for scholars dedicated to promoting the study and spreading the knowledge of the life, influence, and work of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman. NINS furthers these ends by maintaining the Newman Research Library, sponsoring the Newman Scholarship Program, and publishing the Newman Studies Journal.

The goal of the National Institute for Newman Studies is to serve as the definitive resource in the United States for information on John Henry Newman. NINS accomplishes this in three major ways:

The Newman Research Library

The Newman Research Library is a resource for scholars interested in the works of the Venerable John Henry Newman. The Library contains an extensive collection of the writings of Newman. It also contains collections of scholarly works in the fields of theology, spirituality, philosophy, literature, and Church history that either influenced Newman, or were influenced by him. While primarily oriented toward scholarly research, the Library is accessible by the public. Ongoing projects include developing an online catalogue and providing digital imaging of Newman's original manuscripts through a database called the "Newman Knowledge Kiosk." A Board of Advisors is assisting in the selection of the materials included in these resources.

The Newman Scholarship Program

NINS fosters the advancement of Newman scholarly research by inviting scholars to utilize the resources of the Newman Research Library in order to pursue academic work specifically related to Newman Studies. Residential space is available for them at the Library while they are doing research in Pittsburgh, Pa. Additionally, a stipend is offered upon completion of the research project. To be considered for a Newman scholarship, please print, complete, and return the application.

Newman Studies Journal

Twice a year NINS publishes the Newman Studies Journal (NSJ) offering Newman-related articles in such diverse fields as philosophy, theology, spirituality, history, literature, and education. Sources for NSJ articles include proceedings of the Annual National Conference of the Venerable John Henry Newman Association, accepted submissions from the participants in the Newman Scholarship Program, and unsolicited contributions submitted by Newman scholars throughout the world. An Editorial Board, comprised of noted Newman scholars, advises in the selection of papers to be included in NSJ. The editorial office is located at NINS in Pittsburgh, Pa.
